“I hope the Gender Alliance will leverage the potential of our individual work.”

Gender equality is not only a human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world as envisioned by the UN 2030 Agenda. The Gender Alliance is an initiative that pushes for a feminist agenda to foster gender equity in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5. Helene Wolf is one of its members.

Who are you?

Helene Wolf: My name is Helene Wolf and I am the co-founder and executive director of FAIR SHARE of Women Leaders, an initiative to increase the number of women in leadership positions in the non-profit sector. We measure the number of women in senior management and boards and call on organizations to commit to a FAIR SHARE of women leaders by 2030 at the latest. Before that, I served as the deputy executive director of the International Civil Society Centre, a global platform for internationally operating civil society organizations. I live in Berlin with my husband and two kids.

Why did you join the Gender Alliance, and what is most important for you?

Helene Wolf: I think, we need more diverse and global networks that drive gender equality in a spirit of solidarity and mutual support. The Gender Alliance has the potential to be one of those spaces.

Gender Alliance

The Gender Alliance is a network-driven initiative to bring feminists together to accelerate gender equality. Its members come from the BMW Foundation Responsible Leaders Network, the Global Diplomacy Lab, and the Robert Bosch Foundation. Together, they strive to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals on gender equality within their respective organizations, communities, and spheres of influence. This series is an effort to amplify the voices of amazing women who are pushing boundaries, personally and professionally.

What work do you do to promote gender equality?

Helene Wolf: I lead an organization that aims to increase the number of women in leadership positions (senior management/CEO and boards) in the social impact sector globally. We developed the FAIR SHARE Monitor to measure the current discrimination of women in the sector and we created a commitment in which we asked organizations to sign that they will achieve a fair share by 2030 at the latest.

What is your desired outcome of the BMW Foundation Gender Alliance?

Helene Wolf: I hope the Gender Alliance will leverage the potential of our individual work on gender equality, amplify our approaches, and create a platform for exchange, learning, and support. Based on this, we can call on other actors to increase their efforts on gender equality.

Any advice to your 15-year-old self?

Helene Wolf: Start finding YOUR voice!
